Vontae Davis, a former cornerback for the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts, was discovered dead at his South Florida home on Monday, although authorities do not believe in foul play.
According to Davis Police, the 35-year-old man was already deceased when they got at the scene of a medical emergency at his residence on Monday morning. Until the autopsy’s findings are known, the cause of death has not been disclosed.
The inquiry is still ongoing, according to a statement from the police.
Despite being selected by the Dolphins in the first round (25th overall) in 2009 out of Illinois, Davis spent ten seasons playing in the National Football League. His remarkable rookie season, in which he recorded four interceptions—two of which came against Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss and quarterback Tom Brady—is likely what made his stint with the Dolphins most memorable.
Davis’ “do not have attention” was a point of contention for defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and head coach Joe Philbin of the Miami Dolphins in 2012, despite Davis’ potential.
At the beginning of the 2012 season, he was moved to Indianapolis for a second-round pick after spending three seasons as a player for Miami.
In his final season with the Miami Dolphins, Davis racked up 149 total tackles, nine interceptions, and one sack.
After signing with the Buffalo Bills for the 2018 season, the native of Washington, D.C., left the team during the second half of the season. After the game, he made a statement stating that, following numerous operations and injuries, “the truth struck me swiftly and diligently: I shouldn’t be on the field longer.”
Following his time in football, Davis went on to succeed as a businessman and write a children’s book called “The Middle School Rules of Vontae Davis.”
Davis had already experienced legal issues; on February 4, 2023, he was detained for DUI after Florida freeway Patrol police discovered him dozing off on the side of the road after a Hollywood the expressway collision.
With 122 games played, Davis has 22 interceptions, one of which he returned for a score. When he played for the Colts, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015.
The following statement was released by the Miami Dolphins:
We were heartbroken by the untimely passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and would want to extend our deepest condolences to his family at this trying time.
